When We Eat this Bread

Understanding the Most Blessed Sacrament
177 pages
(c) Copyright by Mauricio I. Perez, 2004

The first book of the series Artos Thes Zoohes (Bread of Life) serves as the text book for the class "Understanding the Eucharist". The Most Blessed Sacrament is studied from all its angles, beginning at the anthropological level, and finishing on the spiritual experience. The book presents discussions such as:

  • Why is the most important of the sacraments distributed precisely in the form of a meal (bread and wine), and not in the form of another gesture, such as a kiss, or a blow on the forehead, a pat in the shoulder, or a handshake?

  • What are the roots of the accounts of the institution of the Eucharist found in the New Testament?

  • What are the dogmas all Catholics must believe concerning the Eucharist?

  • Who can be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and what is the true scope of his functions?

Contents:

  1. The History of the Eucharist

  2. The Eucharist in Scripture

  3. The Theology of the Eucharist

  4. The Liturgy of the Eucharist

  5. Rules and Canons

  6. Eucharistic Spirituality

The book contains also three appendixes:

   I. Encyclical "Ecclessia de Eucharistia" of Pope John Paul II
II. Summary of the instruction "Redemptionis Sacramentum"
III. Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Species in the Dioceses of the United States of America
